Blog Master Series: Start Blogging Today with Tumblr

Thanks for stopping by Pro Media Publishing.  Let's take a quick look at a free blogging service called Tumblr.com.  Tumblr is an easy to use blogging platform that allows you to share many different types of media.  This is my first time using Tumblr, so I will be sharing my experiences with the service.  Let's get started.  In this tutorial, we are going to walk through the initial steps of signing up for the Tumblr service.

Step 1

First, head over to Blogger.com.  When you land on the front page for the first time, you will be looking at a list of blog posts from other people using Tumblr. We are here to start using the service, so click on the sign up button in the top right corner.

Step 2

Next is a simple form with three fields.  Fill out the form and click the start button.

Step 3

Step 3 is for age verification and terms of service.  Go ahead and fill in the needed information and let's move on.

Step 4

At this point, you are logged in to Tumblr.  The front page will have the same list of posts as when we first visited for the first time.  The difference, is there are now buttons on the top of the page. We like buttons! You may ask yourself...
  • What do I do now?
  • How can I edit the look and feel of my blog?
  • Where is my blog?
I found myself asking these questions and started looking for a preferences button... but there was none!

Step 5

As the clicking continued, I tried to add a blog post when a message appeared telling me the email address needed to be verified.

Ok, so let's verify the email address and make Tumblr happy.

Step 6

You're great too Tumblr.  Now we have the preferences button!  Tumblr now trusts that we are a real person.  We can start to add content, manage our blog, and adjust the various preferences.

That's all for this tutorial. We will try to keep each tutorial short and specific to one aspect of learning a new system.  In future tutorials, we will discuss how to add take full advantage of your new Tumblr account.  Until next time, thanks for stopping by Pro Media Publishing!
